Description

Amphipods are 2 to 5 mm aquatic crustaceans that are a highly nutritious live food for medium-bodied fish and aquatic pets. They are foundational in aquatic ecosystem food webs. These creatures are detritivores, meaning they consume the dead organic matter such as leaves, sticks, old plant material, that are found at the bottom of a water body. As such they are key recyclers. Amphipods can be encouraged to live in pond filter media to process the waste, improving water quality and increasing the longevity of your filtrations materials. Additionally, as part of a healthy ecosystem, pond fish will enjoy sifting through the detritus and munching on amphipods they find.
