Water lettuce is a natural water purifier, absorbing excess nitrates, ammonia, and phosphates. Its dense, velvety green leaves create floating mats that provide shade and security for shy fish and shrimp. Shrimp love to hang out and graze on the long delicate roots that hang down the water column. It grows in most any size tank, but with any luck it will need trimming or culling as it will quickly spread via runner pups and take over your entire surface. It really thrives in lidless tanks where the velvety florets will stand up tall and even will make small fuzzy white flowers. Most tanks with an average bioload will provide plenty of nutrients for the water lettuce to grow, but if you would like to boost your lettuce growth just add a general aquarium fertilizer once or twice a week.
