Aquarium rocks and stones are essential hardscape materials used to create structure, depth, and naturalistic aquascapes in freshwater and saltwater tanks. Before adding any rock to an aquarium, rinse thoroughly and test for reactivity with white vinegar — if it fizzes, the rock contains calcium carbonate and will raise pH and hardness. This is desirable for African cichlid and rift lake setups but unsuitable for soft-water biotopes. Larger pieces should be placed on the tank bottom before adding substrate to prevent tipping and potential glass damage.
