Gold Dust Molly (Poecilia sphenops) is a selectively bred ornamental strain of the wild-type molly, originating from Mexico, Venezuela, and Colombia. This vibrant livebearer features a striking half-black, half-gold body with a dusting of black speckles, creating a unique, shimmering appearance. Known for its peaceful temperament and active swimming behavior, it thrives in community tanks with other non-aggressive species. Size: Adults reach up to 4 inches, with females typically larger than males. Water Requirements: Prefers hard, alkaline water with a pH of 7.0–8.0, moderate to high hardness, and a temperature range of 68–82°F (20–28°C). It can adapt to both freshwater and saltwater environments with gradual acclimation. Diet: Omnivorous — thrives on algae-based flake food, pellets, brine shrimp, bloodworms, and vegetable matter. Breeding: A prolific livebearer; females give birth to 10–60 live fry every 60–70 days. To reduce stress, maintain 3–4 females per male. Fry are vulnerable to being eaten by adults, so dense plant cover or a breeding box is essential. Tank Setup: Requires a minimum 20-gallon tank with ample plants, algae, and hiding spots. Ideal tankmates include tetras, barbs, danios, and Corydoras catfish.
